Overview

The Rail and Mechanical Business Unit (RMBU) Safety Manager (Rail Safety Manager) is a liaison position between RMBU operations and the Vice President of Safety and Compliance. The Rail Safety Manager will oversee the corporate safety program across the RMBU and ensure the safety and well-being of individuals involved in activities under the RMBU portfolio. The role involves working closely with the Company’s Rail Training Program Manager to develop and deliver applicable training programs. The primary work schedule will be business hours, Monday – Friday (60-75% of the time). The candidate must be able to work during weekends, evenings, and/or overnight hours for site visits or investigations, which may constitute up to 25-40% of the time, generally pre-scheduled.

Role and Responsibilities

  1. Manage the Rail Safety Team
  2. Develop, implement, and oversee safety programs and policies
  3. Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices
  4. Conduct risk assessments for RMBU operations
  5. Identify hazards and develop mitigation strategies
  6. Stay updated on safety regulations and standards
  7. Ensure RMBU activities comply with regulations
  8. Communicate safety protocols to stakeholders
  9. Collaborate with safety professionals to integrate environmental, construction, and industrial safety
  10. Investigate incidents and near misses, and implement corrective actions
  11. Maintain detailed safety records and analyze data for improvements
  12. Establish medical fitness standards with stakeholders
  13. Develop emergency response plans
  14. Coordinate safety training with the Rail Training Program Manager
  15. Ensure personnel hold necessary certifications
  16. Support equipment inspections and maintenance
  17. Review and update safety procedures regularly
  18. Seek continuous safety improvements
  19. Conduct site safety audits and participate in safety meetings
  20. Represent the company in industry safety forums
  21. Engage with third parties such as insurance providers

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (preferred)
  • Certifications such as CSP, ASP, CHST, OHST (preferred)
  • 5-10 years of rail and/or construction safety experience (preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license

Required Experience and Skills

  • Willingness to travel 25-40% to project sites and offices
  • Ability to respond to after-hours emergencies
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic office applications
  • Understanding of FRA, OSHA, NFPA, DOT, EPA regulations
  • Strong communication skills in English
