Job summary

George J. Igel & Co., Inc. is seeking a Safety/Industrial Hygiene Intern to support OSHA and client safety requirements while gaining hands-on experience at the 3500 Alum Creek Drive location and on various job sites.

The role emphasizes attention to safety compliance, reporting, and leadership communication on site. The internship targets undergrads enrolled in OH&S or Industrial Hygiene programs, with training provided for safety audits, paperwork review, and field measurements.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a two- or four-year Occupational Health and Safety or Industrial Hygiene degree program preferred;
  • Familiarity with OSHA, MSHA, DOT, and MUTDC preferred
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening. (George J. Igel & Co., Inc. is a Substance Use Prevention and Recovery Drug-Free Workplace and tests for marijuana).
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a Motor Vehicle Record that satisfies the Company’s insurance requirements

Responsibilities

  • Perform job site safety audits on 10 projects per week after training is complete and send to appropriate project management
  • Review paperwork during safety audits such as foreman reports and site-specific paperwork that is applicable at the time of inspection
  • Attend morning huddles and provide constructive feedback twice a week during audits
  • Attend any onsite safety meetings as required for training purposes with an additional Igel Safety Department representative
  • Perform all safety compliance-related training
  • Effectively communicates with associates & leadership team both orally and in writing
  • Address safety hazards, as they occur, with the onsite crew and make necessary modifications for compliance and safe working practices
  • Identify respirator needs and ensure compliance
  • Identify opportunities to collect industrial hygiene data and coordinate with third parties
  • Be familiar with and educate employees on the use of Igel safety forms
  • Conduct surveys and observe work conditions to identify processes that pose a risk to the health of employees
  • Carry out industrial hygiene field measurements to verify levels of pollution in the workplace
  • Analyze and interpret results of an assessment to develop plans for improved work conditions
  • Assist with safety or industrial hygiene for duties as needed
  • Know and adhere to all company policies and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Safety/Industrial Hygiene Intern

Reports to: Regional Safety Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hours: 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. unless otherwise dictated; 45- 50-hour workweek

Job Location: 3500 Alum Creek Drive, various job sites, with no hybrid or remote work capabilities

General Overview: Supports providing a safe workplace for Igel employees and its subcontractors, as well as achieves and maintains OSHA and DOT compliance, as well as the safety rules and regulations of the clients with whom Igel works. This individual should consistently demonstrate Integrity, Gratitude, Excellence, and Leadership.

Eligibility: This internship opportunity is open to students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program (two- or four-year). Candidates who have completed or are enrolled in graduate-level programs (e.g., master’s, PhD, JD, MD) will not be considered, as this role is designed to support undergraduate-level career development.
