Job description

Would you like to play a crucial role in safeguarding the citizens of Pennsylvania? The Department of General Services, Fire and Safety Environmental Section, is looking for a knowledgeable and experienced Safety Inspection Supervisor to lead the team. In this role, you will assist with the Department's emergency planning, carrying out a wide variety of administrative duties and responsibilities related to departmental emergency readiness and safety. In this role, you will perform the full range of supervisory duties by establishing goals and timeframes; planning, assigning, and monitoring work; approving leave; preparing performance evaluations (EPR's); conducting on-the-job training; resolving disputes; and implementing the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement for the day shift. Work includes maintaining the fire and sprinkler systems for Commonwealth-owned and maintained buildings throughout the Capitol Complex and outlying areas, ensuring all activity and safety reports are complete and accurate, and overseeing the maintenance of buildings and fire detection equipment. You will have the opportunity to evaluate new fire and safety techniques and equipment and recommend action to ensure up-to-date standards. Communication is key as you establish and maintain effective working relationships with all agencies staff, agency fire and safety representatives, agency liaisons, Capitol Police, House and Senate Security, service providers and contractors, and local fire departments.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with 60-minute lunch.
  • Telework:You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Essential Employee - Required to report to work during emergencies and office closings. (Per Bureau of Facilities Management - Essential Employee Policy)
  • Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience as a Safety Inspector (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of experience inspecting commercial, industrial, healthcare or other buildings, structures, machines, apparatus, devices or equipment for compliance with applicable safety codes and regulations;or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Condition of Employment:

  • You must possess a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

Post Employment Requirements:

  • You must obtain a valid certification in 40-Hour HAZWOPER License or HazMat Operations level certificate from an accredited organization within the first year of employment.
  • You must obtain a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry as an Asbestos Supervisor/Contractor License within the first year of employment.
  • You must obtain a valid certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry as an Asbestos Inspector License within the first year of employment.
  • You must obtain a Certificate for Confined Space Entrant, Attendant and Supervisor Training within first year of employment.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
