Job summary

State of North Carolina, Department of Transportation, Human Resources division seeks a Safety Engineer (NS) to lead hazard identification, strengthen safety controls, and keep facilities and field operations safe and efficient. You will analyze hazards, coordinate across large geographic areas, and ensure rigorous safety standards are met.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree and minimum of three years of progressive occupational safety experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability to interpret directives, laws, and regulations from local, state, and federal agencies.
• Experience with hazard analysis, safety program development, and OSHA/ EPA standards.

Responsibilities

• Identify hazards, evaluate unsafe conditions, and drive corrective actions across DOT worksites.
• Improve accident prevention programs and guide management on engineering and compliance requirements.
• Oversee hazard records and manage OSHA compliance priorities.
• Review materials, equipment, and engineering designs to ensure safe use in the field.
• Provide extensive OSHA mandated and regulatory training, including Defensive Driving, OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR/AED, confined space, lockout/tagout, and more.
• Conduct safety surveys, WorkZone studies, industrial hygiene assessments, and exposure monitoring.
• Prepare safety audits, job hazard analyses, emergency plans, environmental compliance projects, and accident investigations.
• Support managers in selecting safety equipment that meets EPA, NFPA, NIOSH, and OSHA standards.
