Job summary

NC Department of Transportation is seeking a Safety Consultant to lead hazard identification, strengthen safety controls, and ensure safe operations across facilities and field sites.

You will conduct occupational safety programs, review designs and equipment, and provide extensive OSHA mandated training. Minimum education and several years of safety experience are required, with focus on risk management and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in safety engineering, industrial engineering, industrial management or technology, occupational safety, or a physical science; and 3+ years of safety/OSH experience.
  • Experience interpreting directives, laws, and regulations from local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Knowledge of risk management, industrial hygiene, biohazards, and chemical carcinogens.
  • Ability to analyze safety problems and apply standard and non-standard safety solutions.
  • Familiarity with data processing and statistical methods.

Responsibilities

  • Identify hazards, evaluate unsafe conditions, and drive corrective actions across DOT worksites.
  • Improve accident prevention programs and guide management on engineering and compliance requirements.
  • Oversee hazard records and manage OSHA compliance priorities.
  • Review materials, equipment, and engineering designs for safe use in the field.
  • Provide OSHA-mandated training (Defensive Driving, OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR/AED, confined space, lockout/tagout).
  • Conduct safety surveys, WorkZone studies, industrial hygiene assessments, and exposure monitoring.
  • Prepare safety audits, job hazard analyses, emergency plans, and environmental compliance projects.
  • Support managers in selecting safety equipment meeting EPA, NFPA, NIOSH, OSHA standards.
