Job summary

The Missouri Department of Transportation, Saint Louis District Office, Chesterfield, MO, seeks a Transportation Enforcement Investigator Intern to assist in routine investigations, safety audits, and educational briefings for motor carriers.

You must be enrolled in a relevant degree program with a minimum GPA and credit hours. The position runs Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. and is wage-based, not benefits eligible, with a 1,039-hour annual cap.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program in Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Law Enforcement, Safety, or related.
• Must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher out of 4.0.
• Must have completed at least 30 credit hours.

Responsibilities

• Assist with routine investigations, educational briefings, and safety audits of interstate and intrastate motor carriers and vehicles for conformance with regulations.
• Assist with economic enforcement inspections of carriers and related operations; investigate complaints regarding unauthorized carrier operations.
• Assist with safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles and hazardous materials reviews.
• Determine severity of identified violations and document serious violations; testify in administrative and legal proceedings.
• Assist with joint inspections and enforcement actions with other state and federal agencies.
• Perform other responsibilities as required.

• Assist with routine investigations, educational briefings, and safety audits of interstate and intrastate motor carriers and vehicles for conformance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Missouri State Statutes in the areas of safety and hazardous materials regulations.
• Assist with conducting economic enforcement inspections of interstate and intrastate motor carriers, the bus and limousine industries, hazardous materials cargo trailers, and mobile home carriers; investigates complaints regarding unauthorized carrier operations.
• Assist with safety inspections of commercial motor vehicles, hazardous materials compliance reviews, and physical inspections.
• Determines the severity of identified violations of carriers, resolving those that are less severe and documenting serious violations; confers with the supervisor concerning violations that warrant legal procedures; testifies in administrative and legal proceedings.
• Assist with conducting joint inspections, investigations, educational briefings, safety audits and economic enforcement actions with representatives of other state and federal agencies.
• Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program in Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Law Enforcement, Safety, or related.
• Must possess, and maintain, an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher out of 4.0.
• Must have completed at least 30 credit hours.

Special Working Conditions And Job Characteristics

• This is a wage, non-benefits eligible position, working no more than 1,039 hours per year.
• This position is primarily performed in an office environment and is not designated as a safety sensitive position. However, duties may occasionally require work in outdoor environments and exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind and other seasonal conditions.
• The typical working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
