Job summary

State of Missouri is seeking a traffic intern to support the Springfield District Office with permit processing, traffic planning, and field inspections. You will engage with contractors, developers, and utilities to ensure compliance with MoDOT standards and department policies.

You will gather reports, assist with work zone approvals, and participate in hearings and presentations as needed. This internship emphasizes safety, service, and collaboration within a regional transportation team.

Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program.
  • 30 credit hours completed toward current degree program; transcripts may be required.
  • GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and issue permits to utility companies, contractors, developers, governmental entities, or individuals for work on department right of way with project specs.
  • Meet with contractors, developers, governmental entities, individuals, and utility companies to explain procedures and policies on granting permits.
  • Review and approve proposed plans for construction on department right of way for feasibility with regard to drainage, sight distance, landscaping, traffic flow, etc.
  • Review work zone requests and approve or restrict work zone activity based on traffic and community impact.
  • Conduct field inspections of projects and work zones and measure traffic control devices for compliance.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence for presentation in department and public meetings.
  • Submit proposals and studies to supervisor or Traffic Division for review and approval.
  • Testify at hearings to explain department actions in permit applications.
  • Assist department personnel with access, utility and other traffic related issues.
  • May assist traffic engineer with striping layouts, signal observations, traffic studies, and lighting requests.
  • May review, inspect, or escort over-dimension loads on state routes.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required or assigned.

Education

Job description

Job Location: Springfield District Office (3025 E. Kearney, Springfield, MO 65803)

The traffic intern reviews and approves work relating to roadway access, traffic handling, and excavation proposed on department right of way, and performs inspections of projects to ensure compliance with specifications set forth in permits. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

  • Prepare and issue permits to utility companies, contractors, developers, governmental entities, or individuals for work on department right of way with designated project specifications and requirements.
  • Meet with contractors, developers, governmental entities, individuals, and utility companies to explain procedures and department policies on granting permits.
  • Review and approve proposed plans for construction on department right of way for feasibility with regard to drainage, sight distance, landscaping, curbing, traffic flow, and related requirements; make recommendation for modification; may coordinate permit work with other district departments.
  • Review work zone requests and approves or restricts work zone activity based on the impact to traffic and the community.
  • Conduct field inspections of projects and work zones, and performs measurements of traffic control devices to ensure compliance with departmental standards.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence for presentation in department and public meetings.
  • Submit proposals and studies to supervisor or to the Traffic Division for review and approval.
  • Testify at formal and/or informal hearings to explain department actions in specific cases pertaining to permit applications.
  • Assist department personnel with access, utility and other traffic related issues.
  • May assist traffic engineer with striping layouts, signal observation studies, traffic studies, and lighting requests.
  • May review, inspect, or escort over-dimension loads on state routes.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Enrolled in a relevant bachelor’s or post-bachelor’s degree program full-time (12+ credit hours).
  • 30 credit hours completed/accepted toward current degree program. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.
  • Possess and maintain an overall GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0, or equivalent.
