Job summary

Newport News Public Schools is seeking a ROTC Instructor – Army to lead JROTC instruction for high school cadets. The incumbent will deliver the JROTC curriculum, supervise summer camps, and develop effective lesson plans aligned to Army and district policies.

The role requires a retired US Army NCO, with a preference for a Bachelor's degree, and eligibility for a Virginia Teaching License. Training to operate NNPS Activity Bus must be completed within the first year.

Qualifications

• Must be a retired United States Army Non-Commissioned Officer.
• Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Must be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License and meet the minimum qualifications required by the Department of the Army.
• Must possess effective instructional delivery techniques, excellent communication skills, and the ability to motivate students to excel.
• Within the first year of employment, must obtain training to operate a NNPS Activity Bus.

Responsibilities

• Delivers and assists with instructing cadets in the JROTC curriculum during the school year.
• Conducts training at JROTC and Aviation Academy summer camps.
• Develops short- and long-range plans for achieving curriculum goals, gathers appropriate materials, establishes clear objectives for lessons, and formulates appropriate lesson plans.
• Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning and the personal growth of students.
• Evaluates student progress and counsel cadets on their performance within the JROTC program.
• Motivates and encourages students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a foundation for becoming a responsible citizen.
• Monitors student movement to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
• Organizes, supervises and participates in extracurricular activities for JROTC cadets to include color guard, drill teams and other special activities.
• Maintains JROTC student records as required by the Department of Army regulations and local policies.
• Complies with Army and school district safety guidelines when instructing, supervising, monitoring, and accompanying cadets.
• Maintains supply accountability in strict compliance with Army security regulations.
• Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media.
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
