Job description

POSITION PROFILE

Under the supervision of the County Library Director, the branch management are the mentors, leaders, and exemplary librarians of their branch. As library staff is the most important resource a library can offer, their primary role is to guide and supervise the library staff by cultivating a safe, respectful, positive, and growth-minded work environment and culture. They must have the emotional stamina to navigate a variety of perspectives and expectations from a diverse staff. The staff mostly consists of Associate Librarians. The branch management may also oversee volunteers, long and short-term. Secondary to the critical supervisory/mentor responsibilities, they also direct a wide variety of library and administrative duties including clerical work, event programming, outreach, technology use, excellent customer service, and management of library facilities and resources. Though they train and delegate many of the day-to-day operations of the library to the staff, they regularly follow up on the quality of services, inside and outside of the library facilities. The manager communicates and collaborates frequently with the County Library Director who mentors them. Managers assume the director's responsibilities in their absence. Through these efforts together, they lead their staff in making Duchesne County Library an essential, efficient community resource and heart of the community that is focused on the progress of its residents.

  • Effectively and promptly manage staff conflict through exemplary communication skills, navigating high emotions by keeping conversations safe, seeking for underlying concerns and meaning, and withholding assumptions about motives in challenging situations. Participate in developing and interpreting library policies with the Library Director. Leads staff meetings and facilitates respectful, productive discussion. Thoughtfully assess what matters and training should be discussed one-on-one rather than in a group setting with the entire staff, preserving trusting relationships.

  • Schedule and oversee library staff workflow and duties, with particular attention to the dependability and quality of library facilities, services, and programs. Train and follow up on those duties and needs. Assist staff with the planning, execution, promotion, and budgeting of those services and programs, including co-sponsored events with community partners.

  • Participate in professional development including workshops, conferences, webinars, etc. to increase professional knowledge, supervisory and communication skills, awareness of local and national trends, and new ideas for library services.
