Job summary

The Lincoln County Public Library System seeks a Branch Library Supervisor to oversee daily operations at a branch library and lead staff. You will manage scheduling, assignment, training, and performance evaluation to ensure excellent service.

You'll develop and monitor adult and children's programs, enforce policies to optimize efficiency, handle financial records, prepare monthly statistics, and support Summer Learning initiatives while assisting patrons at the circulation desk.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; MLS preferred.
  • 1–3 years’ library experience.
  • Valid driver’s license.

JOB SUMMARY

This position supervises the operation of a branch library in the Lincoln County Public Library System.

MAJOR DUTIES
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of a branch library, including scheduling and directing the work of branch staff.
  • Trains, assigns, directs, schedules, supervises, and evaluates personnel.
  • Develops, implements, schedules, and monitors adult and children's programming.
  • Establishes policies and procedures to optimize staff efficiency.
  • Balances money drawer and prepares financial report; keeps copies of all deposit slips to ensure accurate financial records.
  • Compiles monthly statistical reports on library use and program attendance.
  • Ensures that library facility, grounds, and equipment are properly maintained.
  • Participates in annual planning and implementation of the Summer Learning Program.
  • Assists in the selection and weeding of materials in the branch location.
  • Supervises the provision of customer services.
  • Resolves patron problems, including issues related to disputed fines; makes decisions concerning damaged items; handles or directs concerns or complaints.
  • Assists patrons at the circulation desk; checks materials in and out; places materials on reserve; renews and issues library cards; receives payment for fines; registers patrons for internet use and schedules internet sessions; assists patrons in locating materials; assists patrons with public access computers.
  • Performs opening and closing procedures.
  • Performs related duties.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Library Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include county and library policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
  • The work consists of varied administrative, supervisory, and customer service duties.Frequent interruptions contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to supervise the operations of a branch library.Successful performance in this position assures the effective and efficient delivery of services to patrons.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other county employees, patrons, vendors, librarians from other libraries, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate persons.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects and climbs ladders.
  • The work is typically performed in a library.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has shared supervision over assigned branch personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field. Master of Library Science degree preferred.
  • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
