The role supports back‑office, warehousing, and fulfillment operations for Macmillan U.S. and serves as the primary distribution center for North America.

Position Summary

The operator is responsible for managing all rolling equipment—forklifts, Pacer, turrets, order pickers, walkie/riders—and moving, picking, and stacking products at elevations of up to 35 feet while wearing a safety harness. The role includes unloading trucks, staging inventory, initiating bills of lading, and ensuring accurate documentation and labeling for inbound and outbound shipments.

Key duties: 1) Operate equipment such as pacer, turret truck, order picker, walkie/rider, and pallet jack; 2) unload incoming freight and load outbound trucks; 3) place orders in assigned ship locations; 4) stretch wrap and weigh pallets; 5) use WMS and scanners for picking and packing; 6) maintain a clean work area and uphold safety procedures; 7) perform duties such as cycle counting and record-keeping.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Picks cartons and loose stock from backup rack locations and moves product to assigned staging areas.
  • Places labels on cartons for system scanners.
  • Loads cartons on the conveyor or drop zone.
  • Places product in designated picking locations.
  • Places full pallet and partial pallet picks in designated areas.
  • Assists in unloading inbound freight and staging it.
  • Assists in loading outbound trucks.
  • Counts to verify inbound and outbound freight quantities.
  • Inspects cartons and pallets for damage.
  • Prepares product for shipment, ensuring the correct quantity and type is loaded.
  • Ensures receipts/orders are complete and counts verified.
  • Uses scanners and Pick‑To‑Voice devices for picking.
  • Inspects all books for damage and corrects quantities rejected at the QC scale.
  • Inspects and packs special orders.
  • Maintains quality control reports tracking picking accuracy.
  • Returns over‑picks and mis‑picks to the Pick Module.
  • Keeps lead or supervisor advised of shortages, problems, and incorrect labels.
  • Packs books/components in cartons using dunnage materials to eliminate damage.
  • Ensures all work instructions are followed and updates supervisor when completed.
  • Uses computer systems to return product to inventory.
  • Ensures accuracy of all receipt/shipping documents.
  • Ensures that receipt/shipping counts match all documents and bill of ladings.
  • Assists in resolving discrepancies.
  • Assists in cycle counting.
  • Retrieves books from pick module and rack storage to complete orders.
  • Puts away stock in assigned locations.
  • Unloads trucks with rolling equipment.
  • Stages stock in assigned P&D locations and full‑case picks using equipment.
  • Removes plastic covering from skids/pallets of books using a box cutter.
  • Restacks pallets of books from one pallet to another.
  • Uses WMS to record moves and transfer stock.
  • Maintains a clean, neat, and orderly work area.
  • Conducts operations safely, promoting safety, health, and housekeeping.
  • Enforces safety, health, and housekeeping policies to minimize injuries and production loss.
  • Conforms to all company policies and procedures (Employee Handbook).
  • Complies with all environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Hours of work: Monday – Friday, 11:00 a.m. – 7:30 a.m., with mandatory overtime as needed.
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or GED.
Computer skills: Basic knowledge of PCs, keyboarding, and working knowledge of a WMS system.
Mechanical proficiency: Ability to operate turret truck, order picker, pacer, forklift, reach truck, walkie/rider, pallet jack, and work at elevations of 35 feet wearing a safety harness.
Physical: Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; stand, walk, climb, and work at 35‑foot elevations while wearing PPE.
Language: Ability to read, comprehend simple instructions, correspondences, and memos; write legibly and present information to employees individually or in small groups.
Mathematical: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning: Apply common sense to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions and handle standard situations with occasional variables.
Other: Conduct duties safely, meet quality standards, and follow all safety, environmental, and company policies.
