Field AI in Irvine, CA is seeking a Mechanical Systems Intern to contribute to the design and implementation of rugged housing and support systems for sensing and compute platforms deployed in real-world environments.

You will collaborate with electrical, compute, and systems engineers across the full hardware lifecycle, from CAD through production, focusing on mass/volume budgets, thermal management, and producibility while building hands-on experience in a growing robotics company.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Robotics or related field.
• Proficient with SolidWorks or similar CAD tools.
• Familiar with FEA and thermal modeling.
• Experience designing hardware for vibration, shock, and environmental exposure.
• Knowledge of CNC, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, and assembly workflows.
• Ability to collaborate across electrical, compute, and systems engineers.

Responsibilities

• Design and model mechanical structures, enclosures and frames.
• Design and validate sensor mounts and interfaces.
• Implement IP-rated solutions with gaskets and seals.
• Thermal management and mass/volume budgets.
• Build SolidWorks assemblies, run FEA/thermal simulations.
• Prototype and test mechanical systems; support production and QA.
• Create drawings, BOMs, and assembly instructions.
