Job summary

Kaiser Permanente is seeking a Surgical First Assistant to work under direct supervision of a surgeon, serving as the first assistant during procedures. Responsibilities include assisting with exposure and hemostasis, aiding in closure, dressing, and patient transport.

Qualifications

• Minimum one (1) year of continuous, documented experience as a surgical technologist and eligible for certification as CSTFA or SA-C.
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Surgical First Assistant Certificate within 12 months of hire from NBSTSA OR Surgical Assistant Certificate within 12 months of hire from NSA.
• Basic Life Support required at hire.
• Clinical competence required by attending staff development programs.
• Graduate of a First Assistant Program preferred.

Responsibilities

• Position the patient in accordance with the surgeon's instruction.
• Use standard and specialized equipment to aid in patient positioning.
• Provide the surgeon with visualization of the operative site using retractors, sponges, and other techniques.
• Assist with exposure, hemostasis and other technical functions to support safe operations.
• Perform duties as a surgical technologist in all surgical specialties in the ambulatory surgery center.
• Assist with closure of body planes using sutures or staples.
• Select and apply appropriate wound dressings.
• Assist with patient transport to and from the OR.
• Participate in monitoring quality of care according to standards.
• Perform other related duties as indicated.
