Job summary

The Iowa Department of Transportation is hiring a Highway Technician Associate in Altoona. This entry‑level, hands‑on role supports safe, reliable roads and helps us live our core values: Safety First, People Matter, and Integrity Without Exception.

Day to day you patch roadways, repair guardrails and signs, assist with traffic control, remove litter, operate snow equipment, mow and manage vegetation, and perform routine DOT vehicle maintenance.

Qualifications

• CDL permit required on hire.
• Class A endorsements within 5 months of hire.
• Pre-employment physical and drug screen.
• Possibly pesticide/herbicide certifications as needed.

Responsibilities

• Patch roadway and repair and maintain guardrails, signs, fences, lighting, culverts and waterways.
• Assist with traffic control during maintenance activities.
• Disposal of litter and debris.
• Operate snow equipment to clear roadways.
• Mow, brush control and vegetation management, including spraying.
• Perform routine maintenance on DOT equipment and vehicles.
