Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled roadway maintenance worker to install, maintain, repair, and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices. You will operate a range of equipment, perform preventative maintenance, and participate in emergency operations as an essential employee.

You’ll work in active roadways, apply MUTCD standards for detours and lane closures, and collaborate with a crew to complete tasks efficiently and safely.

Qualifications

• CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment or as required.
• Safety shoes required; follow DOT/VDOT policies when operating CDL equipment.
• Experience in work zone setup, traffic controls, and flagging per MUTCD or equivalents.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor and read/work from plans and drawings.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to commute to assigned area.

Responsibilities

• Emergency operations: snow removal, debris clearing, and traffic control.
• Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy highway equipment.
• Apply safety rules and use PPE; ensure safe, clean, and compliant work sites.
• Install, maintain, and repair signs and posts on roadways; track inventory and records.
• Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices in work zones per MUTCD.
