Job summary

The South Dakota Department of Transportation is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker in Tyndall, SD. The role involves keeping state highways safe and drivable, working as part of a crew, and performing maintenance on signs, pavement markings, guardrail, and facilities.

The schedule typically runs May 1 to September 30 as 10-hour days, 4 days a week, Mon–Thu, with additional night work and weekend/holiday shifts during emergencies. From Oct 1 to Apr 30, work is eight-hour days, Mon–Fri.

Qualifications

• Experience operating heavy equipment/farming or ranching equipment preferred.
• Experience in heavy construction preferred.
• Basic math and basic computer operation required (desirable).

Responsibilities

• Perform roadway maintenance activities and roadside tasks.
• Install and replace signs, traffic control devices, and pavement markings.
• Maintain and repair guardrail systems and department facilities.
• Respond to emergencies and incidents; promote safety and public awareness.
• Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
