Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a maintenance worker for the Richland area to operate a tandem truck and a skid steer, hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, and debris. You will follow safety rules while maintaining roads and traffic-control devices.

Responsibilities include supporting emergency and weather operations, lifting up to 50 lbs, and potentially long or overnight shifts. A Class A CDL must be obtained within six months of placement.

Qualifications

  • Six (6) months of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
  • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required on entry.
  • Attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a tandem truck hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe construction materials and debris.
  • Operate a skid steer for filling in low shoulders on primary and secondary roads on SCDOT right-of-way.
  • Perform hand work for ditching operations and cleaning around mailboxes and pipe mouths.
  • Coordinate placement of traffic control devices to set up a maintenance work zone per SCDOT guidelines.
  • Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations, possibly including extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
