Job summary

South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a highway maintenance operator to operate and maintain medium duty equipment, perform road maintenance tasks, and assist in emergency operations. The role requires a valid driver’s license and a Class A CDL to be obtained within six months of placement.

The position commonly involves working outdoors in varying weather, with potential on-call hours and exposure to traffic and hazardous conditions.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience, or an approved equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains medium duty equipment such as tandem dump trucks, skid steer, self-propelled belt loaders and tractor with large mower.
• Performs duties including clearing right-of-ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, potholes, and paving drives.
• Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow and protect workers and the public.
• Operates dump trucks and loads materials like asphalt, limestone, dirt, and pipe for various projects.
• Assists in emergencies and may work outside normal hours or be on-call 24 hours a day.
• Assists in operating heavy machinery such as backhoe, excavator, motor grader and front-end loader.
