Roadway Maintenance Lead: Heavy Equipment Operator

Job summary

State-of-South-Carolina seeks a skilled highway maintenance operator to manage heavy equipment operations, ditching, asphalt patching, and placement tasks across county roads. CDL-A is required within six months of placement, and applicants must have at least two years of related work experience or equivalent.

This role may involve long shifts, overtime during weather events, and leading a crew with safety- and data-entry responsibilities in HMMS while ensuring work is recorded accurately.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position.
• Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Responsibilities

• Operates heavy equipment such as a front end loader and backhoe to ditch sideline and outfall ditches, excavate roadways for repairs, load maintenance materials on trucks, grade ditches and relay reinforced concrete pipe.
• Operates small equipment such as a standard dump truck to haul and dump materials used in highway and right of way maintenance.
• Operates medium equipment such as a large roller to compact asphalt during patching and edging operations; drives tandem dump trucks to haul and load materials.
• Operates power tools such as an edging machine to patch large areas of roadway.
• Instructs crew members daily in safety practices including flagging operations and PPE use.
• Serves as a crew leader coordinating construction, repair, and preservation activities of roads within a county and records work in HMMS.
• Assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and 12-hour shifts.
