The South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks an Equipment Operator to maintain highways and rights‑of‑way. You will operate heavy and medium equipment to ditch, repair roadways, load materials, and relay concrete pipes. Strong emphasis on safety and recording work in HMMS is required.

You’ll lead crew activities, assist with emergency weather responses, and may work extended hours or night shifts as needed to keep roadways safe.

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• Must have a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at entry.
• Must attain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months.

Responsabilités

• Operates heavy equipment such as a heavy duty front end loader and backhoe to ditch sideline and outfall ditches, excavate roadways for repairs, load maintenance materials on trucks, grade ditches and relay reinforced concrete pipe in driveways and crossline pipes.
• Operates small equipment such as a standard dump truck to haul and dump materials used in highway maintenance and right of way.
• Operates medium equipment such as a large roller to compact asphalt during patching and edging operations; hauls/loads with tandem dump trucks.
• Operates power tools such as an edging machine to patch large areas of roadway and keep work areas safe.
• Instructs crew daily in safety practices and coordinates construction, repair, and preservation activities, recording work in the HMMS system.
• Serves as crew leader; assists with emergency and inclement weather operations, may include extended hours and/or 12‑hour shifts.
