Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking skilled personnel to operate and maintain highway equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and complete manual labor tasks essential for keeping Virginia’s roadways safe and functional.

Responsibilities include emergency operations during snow removal, accident cleanup, and traffic control, as well as enforcing safety procedures and following MUTCD guidelines. A valid driver’s license is required to join our dedicated maintenance teams.

Qualifications

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand-held and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light and medium equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction activities.
• Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergency operations and manage roadways during incidents.
• Perform preventative maintenance and complete pre-trip inspections for vehicles or equipment.
• Identify workplace hazards and follow safety rules, regulations, and procedures (OSHA, VOSHA).
• Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, and work zones; maintain a clean and safe work environment.
