Job summary

Ozaukee County is seeking an Equipment Operator to perform skilled and semi-skilled labor, operating light and heavy equipment for road maintenance and construction of local, county, and state highways, roads, and bridges.

The role covers highway maintenance, construction, snow/ice control, machine maintenance, and basic shop upkeep in a mostly outdoor work environment with exposure to traffic and moving machinery.

Qualifications

• High school degree.
• Multiple years of construction and/or skilled labor abilities, and good communication skills.

Responsibilities

• 40% Highway Maintenance: fills cracks, seals chips, mows ditches, paints stripes, installs and repairs road signs, picks up debris, repairs beam guards/cable guards, ditching, repairs gravel shoulders, removes/cuts trees, and maintains/repairs concrete and asphalt roads and bridges.
• 30% Highway Construction: operates asphalt plant, asphalt road paving, operates gravel pit with crushing equipment, replaces culverts, and plans/parks projects (masonry, carpentry, and excavation/grading).
• 15% Snow/Ice Control: operates snowplow/salter, plow controllers, salt brine making/hauling, and installs/removes snow fences.
• 10% Machine Maintenance: performs simple, mechanical maintenance activities on Highway Department equipment including tri-axle trucks, 5-yard trucks, loaders, backhoes, rollers, mowers, and/or skid steers, and ensure clean, proper operations; maintenance for Asphalt Plant & Gravel Pit Crusher operations.
• 5% Maintains Individual Shops: cleans lunchroom/bathrooms, and grounds maintenance.
