Job summary

Atlas in Duluth, GA seeks a Roadway Engineer II to plan, design and deliver transportation infrastructure projects across Georgia. You will perform analyses, prepare design documents, and develop construction plans using MicroStation and OpenRoads under senior guidance.

The ideal candidate has a BSCE, 2–6 years of transportation engineering experience, and strong communication skills. Licensure pathway in Georgia is encouraged and project team collaboration is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • Alternate degree with Illinois licensure and equivalent experience may be considered.
  • 2–6 years of transportation engineering experience.
  • Experience in project management, business development, wetland delineations, or related engineering disciplines preferred.
  • Georgia EIT or PE preferred; GA licensure within six months acceptable.
  • Strong oral communication and technical writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Review survey reports, maps, record drawings, plans and other technical data to support design.
  • Analyze project information for planning, development and execution of engineering projects.
  • Prepare preliminary roadway, drainage, site development and grading designs under supervision.
  • Support development of project layouts and design concepts meeting client objectives.
  • Ensure roadway design and construction complies with applicable standards.
  • Use CAD software (MicroStation/OpenRoads) to prepare drawings and documents.
  • Communicate project status and recommendations to managers and stakeholders.
  • Participate in status and pre-construction meetings providing engineering input.
  • Collaborate with planners, surveyors and other engineers to support project delivery.

Job Description

The Roadway Engineer II supports the planning, design, and delivery of transportation infrastructure projects throughout Georgia, contributing to roadway, drainage, grading, and site development improvements that enhance community mobility and safety. This role performs engineering analyses, prepares design documents, and develops construction plans using industry-standard software such as MicroStation and OpenRoads under the guidance of senior engineering staff. The Roadway Engineer II collaborates closely with project managers, surveyors, planners, and other engineering disciplines to ensure projects are completed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards and regulations. Responsibilities include reviewing technical data, preparing reports and calculations, participating in project meetings, and providing engineering support throughout the design and construction process. The ideal candidate possesses strong technical, communication, and problem-solving skills, along with a commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions for clients and communities. Core Responsibilities

  • Assist with project planning and design by reviewing survey reports, maps, record drawings, plans, and other technical data.
  • Analyze project information to support the planning, development, and execution of engineering projects.
  • Prepare preliminary designs for roadway, drainage, site development, and grading components under the direction of senior engineering staff.
  • Support the development of project layouts and design concepts that meet project requirements and client objectives.
  • Ensure roadway design and construction activities comply with applicable jurisdictional and regulatory standards.
  • Utilize CAD software, including MicroStation and OpenRoads, to prepare engineering drawings and design documents.
  • Communicate project status, concerns, and recommended solutions to managers, team members, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in project status meetings, pre-construction meetings, and technical discussions to provide updates and engineering input.
  • Collaborate with planners, surveyors, civil engineers, and other multidisciplinary team members to support project delivery.
  • Contribute to a team-oriented environment by coordinating effectively across disciplines and maintaining clear communication throughout all project phases.

You’ll thrive here if you have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE) or a closely related field.
  • Candidates with an alternate degree may be considered if they are licensed in Illinois and possess equivalent professional experience.
  • 2 to 6 years of professional experience in transportation engineering.
  • Experience in project management, business development, wetland delineations, or other related engineering disciplines preferred.
  • Additional skills, certifications, or specialized experience may be considered based on project and client needs.
  • Georgia Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) certification preferred; ability to obtain Georgia licensure within six months is acceptable.
  • Strong oral communication and technical writing skills required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word required.
  • Experience with MicroStation and OpenRoads software preferred.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail and quality standards.
