Job summary

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is hiring for a Roadway/Bridge Construction - Transportation Generalist in Owatonna. The role focuses on obtaining samples of bituminous, concrete, and base materials and performing quality tests in the field and in the lab, reading plans, and ensuring contractor compliance with specifications.

Responsibilities include assessing pay items, monitoring contractor work, assisting with plant monitoring, and performing snow and ice duties.

Qualifications

• Must possess a valid Class D driver's license or equivalent and obtain a valid Class B CDL with no Air Brake Restriction and Tank Endorsement within six months.
• Subject to drug and alcohol testing; pre-placement drug testing for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, PCP, amphetamines and acetyl morphine.
• Experience in contract administration, bridge construction, maintenance, design, hydraulics, materials, soils, permits, planning, pre-design, or related fields.
• Education substitutions may replace up to one year of experience with a two-year degree or certain four-year degrees; transcripts may be required.

Responsibilities

• Obtains representative samples of bituminous, concrete, aggregate, grading and base materials and performs tests to ensure quality assurance.
• Performs construction materials acceptance tests in the field to ensure material quality.
• Reads and interprets plans and specifications to ensure contractor compliance.
• Checks dimensions and tolerances of roadway features to ensure conformance to plans.
• Measures and documents pay items to ensure proper payment for work performed.
• Implements inspection processes so test failures are corrected and monitors contractor work for compliance.
• Assists Plant Monitor to ensure materials meet specs and performs snow/ice duties as required.
• Must be able to report to work within one hour of being called.

Education

Two-year Civil or Construction Technology Degree

Four-year degree in Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics

Tools

Aggregate Production Tester Certification (APTC)

Concrete Field Tester Certification (CFTC)

Concrete Plant Tester Certification (CPTC)

Bituminous Plant Tester Certification (BPTC)

Grading & Base Tester Certification (GBTC)
