Job summary

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is seeking a Materials Inspector to sample bituminous, concrete, aggregate, grading and base materials and perform the required tests to assure quality on construction projects.

Responsibilities include field tests, verification of plans, checking dimensions, documenting pay items, and supporting contractor compliance; a valid CDL with the required endorsements must be obtained within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• One year of experience in contract administration, road/bridge construction, or related fields.
• Education: a two-year Civil/Construction Technology degree or a four-year engineering/geomatics degree.

Responsibilities

• Obtain representative samples of bituminous, concrete, aggregate, grading and base materials and perform tests.
• Perform field acceptance tests (gradations, density, air, beam, cylinder, slump) as required.
• Read and interpret plans and specifications to ensure contractor compliance.
• Check dimensions and tolerances of roadway features for conformance to plans.
• Measure, compute and document pay items for contract payment.
• Implement inspection processes so that test failures are corrected.
