Job summary

Johnston-Willis Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare, invites applications for an RN Student Nurse Extern in the Surgical Care Unit. You will gain hands-on experience delivering safe, compassionate care under supervision, and you will develop the skills needed to advance your nursing career.

Responsibilities include assisting with ADLs, monitoring vital signs, wound/catheter care, and documenting care. This program emphasizes learning, growth, and preparation for more advanced nursing

Qualifications

• Enrolled in an accredited RN nursing program.
• ACLS certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment.
• No prior work experience required.

Responsibilities

• Assist with ADLs, check vital signs, support mobility, and ensure patient comfort and hygiene.
• Perform basic nursing tasks as experience grows (wound care, catheter care, specimen collection).
• Document care accurately and communicate updates to the nursing team.
• Help patients and families understand care plans and health guidance.
• Maintain clean, safe patient areas following infection prevention practices.
• Engage in growth opportunities and partner with supervisor on career development.

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Nurse Extern, you’ll be a valued part of the nursing team, gaining hands‑on experience as you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. You’ll help deliver safe, compassionate care that improves patients’ lives while building the skills and confidence to take on more advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene
• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency
• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated
• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery
• Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment
• Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan

What qualifications you will need:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
• Actively enrolled in an Accredited Nursing Program (RN)
• No previous work experience required
