Job summary

Johnston-Willis Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare, is seeking an RN Student Nurse Extern for its Float Pool. The role offers hands‑on exposure to the Registered Nurse scope while you advance through your nursing program and contribute to safe, compassionate patient care.

You will assist with ADLs, monitor vital signs, perform basic nursing tasks, document care, and communicate with the team. This PRN opportunity supports your growth and future responsibilities in nursing.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in Accredited Nursing Program (RN).
• BLS certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of start date.

Responsibilities

• Providing essential care for patients by assisting with ADLs, checking vital signs, supporting mobility and comfort.
• Performing basic nursing tasks such as wound care, catheter care and specimen collection.
• Documenting care and communicating updates with the nursing team.
• Educating patients and families about care plans and recovery guidance.
• Maintaining clean, safe patient areas and adhering to infection prevention practices.
• Engaging in growth opportunities and developing a personal career plan with a supervisor.

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Nurse Extern, you’ll be a valued part of the nursing team, gaining hands‑on experience as you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. You’ll help deliver safe, compassionate care that improves patients’ lives while building the skills and confidence to take on more advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene


• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency


• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated


• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery


• Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment


• Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan

What qualifications you will need:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date


• Actively enrolled in an Accredited Nursing Program (RN)


• No previous work experience required
