Job summary

Johnston-Willis Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare, is seeking an RN Student Nurse Extern for the GYN Surgery Unit. You will gain hands-on nursing experience while delivering safe, compassionate care to patients under supervision.

This PRN role offers exposure to perioperative and gynecologic nursing, with opportunities to grow by taking on more responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited RN program.
• BLS certification must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
• No prior work experience required.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), monitor and document vital signs, support mobility and comfort.
• Perform basic nursing tasks under supervision, including wound and catheter care as you progress.
• Document care and communicate updates to the nursing team.
• Explain care plans to patients and family, ensuring understanding and engagement.
• Maintain clean, safe patient areas and follow infection prevention practices.
• Engage in learning opportunities and develop a personal career plan with your supervisor.

Job Summary and Qualifications

As a Nurse Extern, you’ll be a valued part of the nursing team, gaining hands‑on experience as you explore the full scope of the Registered Nurse role. You’ll help deliver safe, compassionate care that improves patients’ lives while building the skills and confidence to take on more advanced responsibilities as you progress through your nursing program.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing essential care for patients by helping with ADLs (Activities of Daily Living), checking vital signs, supporting mobility, and ensuring comfort and hygiene


• Performing nursing tasks like wound care, catheter care, collecting specimens, and other basic procedures as you gain experience and grow in your competency


• Documenting care accurately and communicating timely updates with the nursing team to keep patient care seamless and coordinated


• Helping patients and families understand their care plans and offering guidance for their health and recovery


• Keeping patient areas clean and safe by following infection prevention practices, managing equipment, and maintaining an organized environment


• Championing your growth and enhancing patient care by engaging in learning opportunities, sharing ideas to improve care, and partnering with your supervisor or preceptor to build your personal career development plan

What qualifications you will need:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date


• Actively attending an accredited RN program


• No previous work experience required
