Job summary

UAB Medicine in Birmingham, AL seeks qualified ICU nurses to join the 1South Medical Intensive Care Unit. The unit supports both night (7:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m.) and day (7:00 a.m.

– 7:00 p.m.) shifts, with a focus on teamwork, teaching, and delivering high‑quality patient care. Staff enjoy a collaborative environment and ongoing professional development. Provide direct patient care in a 18‑bed Medical ICU, act as a primary coordinator across disciplines, and participate in discharge planning.

Qualifications

• State nursing licensure to practice in Alabama at time of hire.
• ACLS and BLS required within specified timelines.
• Diploma from an accredited nursing program and current licensure.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care in accordance with policies and procedures.
• Implement and monitor individualized patient care plans; document and communicate changes.
• Coordinate as primary multidisciplinary care coordinator for well‑ordered patient care.
• Record and carry out physician and nursing orders; ensure accuracy of orders.
• Assess discharge planning needs with the healthcare team and coordinate when appropriate.

Our 1South ICU, which is also a Medical ICU, has 18 beds. We pride ourselves on team cohesiveness. All of the patient care supervisors are readily available M-F and leadership of all levels has a great presence daily. We are always accepting new graduates, everyone enjoys teaching, and no one is left to do things alone.

Job Description

Provide direct nursing care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of the healthcare organization.

• Implement and monitor patient care plans. Monitor, record and communicate patient condition as appropriate.
• Serve as a primary coordinator of all disciplines for well-coordinated patient care.
• Note and carry out physician and nursing orders.
• Assess and coordinate patient's discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team.

Qualifications

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

• BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
• Advanced Life Support obtained within 6 Months (180 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
• Licensed Associate Professional Registered Nurse credentialed from the Alabama Board of Nursing obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required.

Education:

• Diploma from an accredited school/college of nursing AND Required professional licensure at time of hire.
