Job summary

Odessa Regional is seeking a Preadmission Testing Registered Nurse to perform comprehensive preoperative assessments and coordinate required testing and clearances to ensure safe surgery planning.

The PAT RN will review medical histories, medications, and diagnostics, identify high-risk patients, and collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia, and perioperative staff to optimize patient readiness.

Qualifications

  • Current Texas Registered Nurse license.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • ACLS preferred.
  • Previous perioperative, PACU, ICU, ED, or PAT experience preferred.
  • Strong assessment, communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive preoperative nursing assessments in person and by telephone.
  • Review medical history, surgical history, allergies, medications, and current health status.
  • Identify high-risk patients and escalate concerns to anesthesia or appropriate provider.
  • Coordinate required laboratory studies, diagnostic testing, medical clearances, and specialty consultations.
  • Provide patient education regarding preoperative instructions and medication management.
  • Verify completion and accuracy of required documentation including H&P, consents, and physician orders.
  • Collaborate with physician offices, scheduling, registration, anesthesia, and perioperative staff to ensure patients are prepared.
  • Review abnormal lab or diagnostic results and communicate findings.
  • Utilize critical thinking to identify barriers delaying surgery.
  • Maintain compliance with CMS, DNV, AORN, and hospital policies.
  • Document assessments and communications in EMR.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.

Job description

The Preadmission Testing Registered Nurse (PAT RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive preoperative nursing assessments to ensure patients are safe and prepared for surgery. The PAT RN reviews patient medical histories, medications, laboratory and diagnostic results, and identifies potential risks that may impact the surgical plan. This position works collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, primary care providers, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure all required testing, documentation, and clearances are completed prior to the day of surgery.

  • Provide patient education regarding preoperative instructions, medication management, fasting guidelines, infection prevention, and postoperative expectations.
  • Verify completion and accuracy of required documentation including H&P, consents, and physician orders.
  • Collaborate with physician offices, scheduling, registration, anesthesia, and perioperative staff to ensure patients are appropriately prepared.
  • Review abnormal laboratory or diagnostic results and communicate findings according to established policies.
  • Utilize critical thinking and evidence-based practice to identify barriers that could delay or cancel surgery.
  • Maintain compliance with CMS, DNV, AORN, hospital policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Accurately document assessments and communications within the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, patient safety activities, and departmental education.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold professional nursing standards.

Qualifications:

  • Current Texas Registered Nurse license.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • ACLS preferred.
  • Previous perioperative, PACU, ICU, ED, or PAT experience preferred.
  • Strong assessment, communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records and Microsoft Office applications.
