Job summary

USPI Memorial Hermann Endoscopy Center North Freeway is seeking a Preadmission Nurse (PAT RN) to organize and direct preadmission activities in accordance with nursing standards and federal/state guidelines. The RN will contact patients by telephone before surgery, assess medical histories, review orders, and provide preadmission teaching.

The RN cares for adults, from infants to geriatrics, and may perform preop labs as ordered.

Qualifications

  • Current Texas Nursing License.
  • Minimum two-year experience in a hospital setting.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is required due to patient population.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and executes preadmission for patients undergoing surgery.
  • Communicates nursing interventions and patient responses to the medical team.
  • Maintains and updates patient records and documentation.
  • Ensures compliance with nursing standards and applicable regulations.
  • Keeps certifications current (BLS, ACLS, PALS) as applicable.

Job Summary

The Preadmission Nurse (PAT RN) will organize and direct activities in accordance with nursing standards and applicable federal, state, and local guidelines. The RN will contact patients by telephone prior to surgery to assess medical and medication histories, review lab, x‑ray, EKG orders, determine where and when these procedures are to be completed, and provide preadmission teaching. The RN will care for adult patients, including older adults through geriatric, and pediatric patients from 4 months through adolescence. The RN may perform laboratory testing as ordered before surgery.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plans and prepares for patient preadmission.
  • Meets all required deadlines, demonstrating discretion in establishing priority.
  • Delivers indirect and direct patient care according to established standards, taking into account age and risk factors.
  • Uses nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Applies nursing judgment in decision‑making.
  • Advocates for patient physical and psychological needs.
  • Performs patient assessment and reassessment immediately upon admission and regularly thereafter, documenting the findings for care planning.
  • Communicates all nursing interventions and patients’ responses to responsible practitioners, ensuring documentation in line with standards.
  • Integrates and coordinates care across settings and among disciplines.
  • Implements physician orders safely and effectively in line with standards of practice.
  • Recognizes and intervenes in stressful situations.
  • Maintains BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications as applicable.
  • Acquires and maintains skills on equipment necessary to fulfill responsibilities.
  • Documents all records following established policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and updates policies and procedures as needed.
  • Provides patient or parent teaching at appropriate level of understanding.
  • Performs additional duties as needed by the department.
Qualifications
  • Current Texas Nursing License.
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Minimum two‑year experience in a hospital setting.
  • Ability to recognize, evaluate, solve problems, and correct errors.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, hospital staff, physicians, vendors, and the public.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates accountability, professionalism, openness, receptiveness to change, creativity, and innovation.
  • Strong knowledge base regarding surgical procedures and surgical patient management.
  • Understands aseptic technique principles and their implementation.
  • Can care for patients from infancy to geriatrics.
  • Excellent teaching skills.
  • Basic knowledge of performance improvement principles.

Due to the patient population speaking only Spanish, candidates must be bilingual in English and Spanish.
