Unit Information
- Beds: 16 on Pediatric Hematology/Oncology (PHO) and 16 on Pediatric Acute (PA)
- Average daily census: 14-32 patients
Experience Requirements
- PHO: Minimum 1 year in pediatric hematology/oncology acute care
- PA: Minimum 1 year in pediatric acute care
- First-time travelers accepted with a strong pediatric background
Patient Types and Common Diagnoses
Leukemia, solid tumors, sickle cell crisis, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, behavioral health overlay, general adolescent medicine
Patient Ratios
- RN: Pediatric Adolescent Medicine - 1:4-5
- CNA: 1:6-16
Required Licensure & Certifications
- PA: BLS required, PALS preferred
Required Skills
- Central line management
- Chemotherapy administration
- Strong pediatric assessment and critical thinking
Departmental Support
- CNA: vital signs, activities of daily living, safety rounding, intake and output monitoring
- Receptionist/HUC
- Charge nurse
- Phlebotomy
- IV/Vascular Access Team for difficult peripheral access
- Resource Nurse (availability varies)
- Respiratory Therapist, 24/7
- Hospitalist, 24/7
- Intensivist, 24/7
- Bedside telemetry monitoring (no telemetry technician available)

- Unit-specific monitoring equipment
Floating
- Routine floating between PA, PHO, and other units within the facility except Pediatric Emergency Department
Orientation
- New Employee Orientation (NEO)
- 2 days departmental orientation
Scheduling
- Weekend rotation: every other weekend
- No on-call requirement
- Holiday coverage: travelers expected to work 75% of holidays
- Shift times: 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM
- Schedule cycle: every 6 weeks
