Job summary

RN - Neonatal ICU

About Facility

• 361 licensed beds
• Level III NICU
• Level 2 Trauma Designation
• Teaching Hospital with Residency Program
• Chest Pain Center
• Stroke Center

Unit Information

• Beds: 23
• Average daily census: 12-15 patients
• Minimum experience required: 2 years in Level III or IV NICU
• First-time travelers accepted

Patient Types and Common Diagnoses

• Patients 23 weeks gestation and above
• Conditions include respiratory distress, micro-premies, bubble CPAP/oscillator support, drug and alcohol exposure (using Eat, Sleep, Console method), observation and treatment for hypoglycemia, treatment of jaundice, and care for feeders/growers
• EPIC experience required within the last year (manager approval needed if over a year)
• No surgical interventions or ECMO cases

Patient Ratios

• Ratio ranges from 1:1 to 1:3 depending on acuity
• May increase to 1:4 for feeders/growers only

Required Licenses and Certifications

• BLS and NRP required
• STABLE certification preferred

Required Skills

Department Support

• Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) available 24/7
• NICU Respiratory Therapist available 24/7
• Occupational Therapist and Certified Lactation Consultant during the day
• Two neonatologists on site during the day and on call at night
• Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) support
• Charge nurse available 24/7, typically without patient assignments
• Manager/Supervisor present during the day

• Unit-specific equipment includes milk preparation room with Angel Eye and Medfusion syringe pumps for fluids and feeds

Orientation

• Neonatal orientation provided
• Duration: 2-3 shifts depending on experience and comfort level

Scheduling

• Weekend rotation: every other weekend
• No on-call duties
• Holiday coverage: approximately 50% of holidays or every other holiday during contract
• Request Time Off (RTO) approval: up to 5 days approved; holiday‑related days require manager approval
• Shift times: 07:00-19:30 and 19:00-07:30
• Schedule cycle: self-scheduling for preferred shifts with final approval by manager; schedules released in 6‑week increments about 2 weeks prior
• Overtime may be considered upon request but is not guaranteed
