Job Summary

Provides direct patient care in the maternity and newborn care setting. Communicates with physicians about changes in patient’s clinical condition, including fetal monitoring, results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment. Performs general nursing duties in all departments with adequate supervision and participates in performance improvement activities.

Job Duties And Responsibilities
  • Knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on the age of the patient and their clinical condition.
  • Assess neonate at delivery and perform neonatal resuscitation. NRP certification.
  • Perform head‑to‑toe assessments on all patients and reassess as per policy, including neonatal and general patient populations.
  • Formulate individualized plans of care and revise plans as indicated by patient response to treatment.
  • Formulate a teaching plan based upon identified learning needs and evaluate effectiveness (family included in teaching as appropriate).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of electronic fetal monitoring, identify FHR patterns, and treat appropriately based on ACOG/NCC standards.
  • Communicate appropriately and clearly with house supervisors, co‑workers, and physicians.
  • Consult other departments as appropriate to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
  • Actively participate in patient education, including self‑care, infant care, feeding, and bathing.
  • Coordinate and supervise patient care as necessary.
  • Assist physicians with procedures in labor and delivery, postpartum, and newborn nursery.
  • Remain flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations.
  • Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity.
  • Interact professionally with patient/family and involve them in the formation of the plan of care.
  • Maintain good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
  • Document care in accordance with current standards and policies.
  • Identify and address psychosocial needs of patients and families.
  • Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
  • Attend in‑services.
Requirements
  • Adheres to dress code and maintains a neat appearance.
  • Completes annual educational requirements.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements, including all state, federal, and CMS regulations.
  • Ensures patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Reports to work on time, follows schedule, and completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification while on duty and uses computerized punch‑time system correctly.
  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative working relationships with physicians, departments, and staff.
  • Actively participates in departmental CQI activities.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety, and infection control.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Complies with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, vision, core values, ethics, and goals of the hospital and the department.
Regulatory Requirements
  • Current state Registered Nurse Licensure.
  • One or more years of recent Labor and Delivery/Newborn Nursery experience.
  • Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation certification.
  • BCLS and fetal monitoring certification.
  • ACLS certification.
