Job summary

CP01 Carilion Medical Center is seeking a qualified RN for the Float Pool. This full-time position requires accountability for nursing coordination and individualized care across various specialties. You will assess and implement patient care, collaborating with healthcare teams to ensure optimal outcomes.

Responsibilities
  • Consistently deliver the highest quality care and customer service, demonstrating respect, dignity, kindness, and empathy in every patient encounter.
  • Assume primary accountability for nursing coordination and individualized care for patients of all ages across Med‑Surg, PCU, ICU, and specialty tracks (Peds, PICU, NICU, M/B, ED Observation Unit, Inpatient Rehab, Psych).
  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care to achieve optimum outcomes, completing age‑specific admission and ongoing assessments and using them to guide the plan of care.
  • Collaborate with the health‑care team, patients, and families to develop, implement, and evaluate interdisciplinary plans of care.
  • Revise plans in response to changes in patient status and administer treatments and medications accurately, documenting all actions in automated electronic medical records.
  • Identify and address patient/family educational needs, incorporating them into the care plan and documenting implementation.
  • Contribute to the clinic’s performance‑improvement activities and consistently act as a patient advocate and protector of patient rights.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development to deliver age‑appropriate care.
  • Support clinical, leadership, or education pathways to provide evidence‑based, quality patient care and drive performance improvement initiatives.
  • Exhibit clinical expertise in rapidly evolving circumstances, planning strategies to reduce length of stay, turnaround time, resource use, and improve outcomes.
  • Act as a role model for clinical practice to coworkers, students, and physicians.
  • Manage resources, establish priorities, and modify the environment to meet patient care needs.
  • Complete predetermined projects within specified time frames and guidelines.
  • Apply problem‑solving methods to resolve patient and personnel situations and provide orientation and feedback to new employees.
  • Participate in unit, hospital, or system activities to influence practice, environment, and work issues, fostering staff participation in decision making.
  • Assist with educational activities for the unit or department and may be asked to perform other job‑related duties as needed.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing or an approved nursing program eligible to sit for the Virginia RN licensure examination.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Virginia or eligible to obtain Virginia RN licensure.
  • Required life‑support certification: AHA BLS‑HCP; may need to obtain or maintain BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP based on unit.
  • Computer skills required for electronic medical records (EPIC).
