Job summary

MemorialCare is seeking a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) in Laguna Hills, CA, to join the Surgery Services (OR) team. The RNFA collaborates with surgeons intra-operatively, directs unlicensed staff, and ensures high‑quality patient care. A California RN license and RNFA certifications are required, with a signing bonus for external hires.

Shift is days with 10‑hour blocks. The role emphasizes leadership, patient advocacy, documentation accuracy, and adherence to AORN standards.

Qualifications

• Current California RN License required.
• Bachelor’s degree in nursing or Master’s preferred.
• NPI Number from NPPES required.
• One plus years of RNFA experience preferred; In lieu of this experience, consideration will be made for an employee with evidence of completion of an RNFA training program with preceptorship.
• Ability to fulfill the on-call requirement of the department.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Cardiac Life Support Card
• Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support Card
• Current Nurse Operating Room Certification
• Current RNFA Certification
• Specialty Certification preferred
• Computer, internet, order entry, and word processing experience preferred

Responsibilities

• Uses the nursing process and AORN standards as a framework for patient care.
• Demonstrates leadership and serves as a link between the surgical suite and the rest of the hospital to provide continuity of care during the intra-operative phase.
• Prioritizes essential functions to focus on the needs of the surgical patient.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the clinical information system and applies principles to patient documentation.
• Serves as a role model and mentors new staff members.
• Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights. Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial and other sensitive material in printed, electronic or verbal form, which may jeopardize the privacy of patients and or employees.
• Demonstrates the ability to use good customer service skills by managing and acknowledging patient-family-significant other expectations.
• Demonstrates tact, sensitivity and discretion.
• Demonstrates the ability to integrate knowledge of job specific competencies.
• Demonstrates knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and Operating Room technique.
• Provides exposure through appropriate use of surgical instrumentation, suctioning and sponging techniques.
• Works in collaboration with the surgeon on coagulation, sutures muscles, fascia, and subcutaneous skin tissue.
• Demonstrates the ability to function in the role of the Operating Room Circulator or Scrub when not assigned to the RNFA role.
• Ability to be at work and be on time.
• Ability to follow company policies, procedures and directives.
• Ability to interact in a positive and constructive manner.
• Ability to prioritize and multitask
