Job summary

Carle Health is seeking an RN First Assist to support the surgeon during operations and to practice perioperative nursing with independent assessment and post‑operative evaluation. The RNFA collaborates closely with the surgeon, OR team, and support staff to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes.

Qualified candidates hold an RN license (IDFPR), BLS within 30 days, CNOR certification, and have 2+ years of perioperative nursing experience.

Qualifications

• Current RN license issued by IDFPR
• BLS certification within 30 days of hire
• CNOR certification
• College Diploma in Nursing
• Certificate of Completion of an accredited RNFA program
• 2+ years of perioperative nursing experience

Responsibilities

• Assist surgeon in general and specialized surgeries.
• Collaborates with surgeons and OR team to ensure needed trays, instrumentation, and supplies are ready for each procedure.
• Provide patient care and support
• Administer medications
• Perform surgical procedures such as controlling bleeding and suturing incisions, draping, providing exposure, and handling tissue
• Position and prepare the patient on the operating table
• Monitor the patient’s vital signs and heart rate
• Educate patient and family on operation and aftercare; communicate health of patient to family
• Perform post-operative assessments; monitor for pain and complications
• Study patient history and health assessments
• Monitor surgery site for healing or infection
• Participate in research
• Scrub and circulate based on unit needs
• Prepare all necessary supplies; assist in organizing and coordinating supplies and equipment; charges for equipment and supplies
• Assist in room turnover
