Unit Overview

Allegheny General Hospital's 5A Telemetry Observation Unit is a specialized 38‑bed unit focused on rapid assessment, treatment, and monitoring for patients presenting with acute medical conditions such as chest pain, transient ischemic attacks, trauma, and altered mental status. Patients awaiting IR procedures or those who can no longer care for themselves at home are also cared for on this unit. The unit operates as a Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) or Observation Unit, providing a bridge between the Emergency Department and longer‑stay inpatient care.

Location & Shift

Allegheny General Hospital – 5A Telemetry Observation Department.

Shift: 80 hours every two weeks. Rotations follow established guidelines. Union: No.

Responsibilities

• Oversee, monitor and collect data related to the facility and department's quality and satisfaction measures.
• Serve as the clinical expert and role model for staff, monitoring and mentoring performance and following up appropriately. Perform supervisory duties as required.
• Demonstrate effective leadership through strong communication and interpersonal skills, enhancing professional relationships to achieve desired outcomes.
• Utilize the nursing process to provide and coordinate patient‑care plans for the appropriate population.
• Ensure appropriate staffing levels and mix to optimize routine operations while meeting productivity requirements.
• Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications – Minimum

• Current State of PA RN licensure or current multi‑state licensure through the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
• Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.
• Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate.
• Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.
• CPR certification.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or equivalent experience/education in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.

Qualifications – Preferred

• BSN.
• Three years’ experience in clinical specialty.
• Previous supervisory experience.
• Certification in an area of specialty.
