Job summary

Brown & Root Industrial Services in Baton Rouge is seeking a Leadman to oversee rigging crews, guide crane operations, and assist the Foreman as a journeyman.

The role requires coordinating loads, selecting rigging gear, and ensuring safety on site, with practical experience in knots, hoisting, and setup. This on-site position offers hands-on leadership in industrial projects and the opportunity to advance with our team.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; prior rigging or crane experience preferred.
  • Familiar with safety rules and standard rigging practices.

Responsibilities

  • Loads, transports, unloads and selects cables, ropes, pulleys and winches based on load size.
  • Attaches pulleys/blocks to overhead structures with bolts and clamps.
  • Attaches load with grappling devices to crane hook.
  • Directs crane operator to ensure safety using signals or radio.
  • Sets up braces and rigs hoisting equipment with hand tools.
  • Knots various rope/cordage for lifting and securing loads.
  • Assembles and disassembles cranes.
  • Splices rope and wire to make/repair slings or tackle.
  • Directs workers during hoisting onto/off ships, railcars or trucks.
  • Performs minor maintenance or cleaning of tools and equipment.
  • Observes all safety rules; performs other duties as required.

Leadman - Provides leadership, instruction, and guidance to other craft workers in work crew, providing assistance to Foreman, while working in the capacity of a journeyman.

SUMMARY

Assembles rigging to lift and move equipment or material to construction project.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Loads, transports, unloads and assists in selecting cables, ropes, pulleys, winches, blocks and sheaves, according to weight and size of load to be moved.
  • Attaches pulley and blocks to fixed overhead structures, such as beams, ceilings and gin pole booms with bolts and clamps.
  • Attaches load with grappling devices such as loops, wires, ropes and chains to crane hook.
  • Gives direction to crane operator or hoisting engineer engaged in hoisting and moving loads to ensure safety of workers and material handled using hand signals, loudspeaker, two‑way radio or telephone.
  • Sets up braces and rigs hoisting equipment using hand tools and power wrenches.
  • Has ability to tie various knots.
  • Assembles and disassembles cranes.
  • Splices rope and wire cables to make or repair slings or tackle.
  • May direct workers engaged in hoisting of machinery and equipment onto or off ships, railroad, cars or trucks.
  • Performs minor maintenance or cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
  • Responsible for observing all safety rules. Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
May require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly‑used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre‑established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
