Job summary

Commonwealth Fusion Systems in Cambridge, MA, seeks a Mechanical Engineer, RF Systems to own the mechanical design of SPARC RF heating infrastructure, from large-diameter transmission lines to cooling plates for high-power electronics.

You will collaborate with RF and electronics engineers, translate requirements into manufacturing-ready hardware, and guide a CAD drafting team while ensuring safety and manufacturability.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
• 5+ years hands-on mechanical design in heavy machinery/high-power electronics/aerospace environments.
• Primary creator/owner of mechanical design architectures.
• Experience with structural and thermal analyses to validate designs.
• Proficient in 3D CAD and GD&T for manufacturing drawings.
• Strong understanding of heat transfer, structural mechanics and fluid dynamics.
• Experience with Siemens NX for 3D modeling and Teamcenter for PLM/drawing release.
• Experience designing large-scale pipe routing, coaxial transmission lines, flanges, bellows, or cooling systems.
• Experience with electronics assemblies and thermal management.
• Ability to lift up to 50lbs and perform physically demanding tasks.
• Willingness to travel and work nights/weekends/on-call occasionally.
• Work in environments with industrial hazards (heat, noise, high voltage, cryogenics).

Responsibilities

• Own the mechanical design and integration of robust systems for RF heating infrastructure.
• Design large-scale transmission lines, bellows, and heat exchangers.
• Collaborate daily with CAD drafting teams and other engineers.
• Translate requirements into manufacturing-ready hardware and drawings.
• Architect thermal management with integrated cooling loops.
• Develop sheet metal components and mounting hardware for assemblies.
• Perform structural and thermal analyses to validate designs.
• Interface with RF/electronics, process, and other disciplines.
