Job summary

Southern Company Gas, part of the Southern Company family, seeks a Staff Accountant II to analyze and reconcile billed and unbilled revenue, support month-end close, and partner with Billing, Credit, IT, and Regulatory teams. You will investigate variances, automate where possible, and assist with audits and data analysis.

You will handle journal entries, reconciliations, and escheatment cycles, while developing reports and dashboards for regulatory reporting and management review.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting is required.
• 2–4 years of accounting experience.
• Experience with month-end close.
• Experience with journal entries and reconciliations.
• Experience with customer billing is a plus.
• Experience with escheatment/unclaimed property a plus.
• Experience analyzing large datasets with Excel or reporting tools.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Experience identifying process improvements.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
• Experience with ERP systems such as Oracle.
• Experience with reporting and query tools is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Analyze daily transactions from the billing system to ensure data integrity.
• Review customer refund transactions for reasonableness.
• Prepare journal entries for month end close.
• Perform controls to ensure revenue recognition is complete.
• Investigate discrepancies and escalate as needed.
• Process unclaimed property transactions and escheatment cycles.
• Prepare monthly tax payment requests and returns.
• Collaborate with Billing, Credit, and IT to resolve issues.
• Provide information to auditors and support regulatory reporting.
• Prepare standard reports and develop queries for ad hoc requests.
• Perform monthly account reconciliations and address issues.
• Identify opportunities to automate and improve reporting efficiency.
• Support system enhancements and testing and process improvement initiatives.
• Develop and maintain recurring reports and dashboards.
• Partner with internal departments to resolve revenue and billing issues.
