Job summary

Northwell Health in Elmhurst, NY seeks a skilled Respiratory Therapist to perform comprehensive respiratory assessments, administer prescribed therapies, and educate patients and families. You will prepare, operate, and maintain respiratory care equipment and document care per policy.

Responsibilities include bedside pulmonary function studies, ventilator management, airway care, oxygen therapy, and collaboration with physicians to monitor response and adjust care.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Certificate from accredited respiratory therapist program required; Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
• Licensed Respiratory Therapist (LIC-RT) in NY State and/or Connecticut required.
• Registered Respiratory Therapist (CER-RRT) with NBRC required.
• Advanced and Basic Life Support certification required.

Responsibilities

• Performs comprehensive respiratory assessment.
• Uses assessment data to identify problems.
• Performs bedside pulmonary function studies per physician order.
• Collaborates with physicians on plan of care.
• Evaluates patient responses to respiratory care.
• Delivers care using established protocols.
• Provides patient/family respiratory therapy education as ordered.
• Completes departmental paperwork and assists with inventory control.
• Performs chest therapy to loosen secretions as needed.
• Assists in Pulmonary Stress Testing when necessary.
• Performs suctioning and collects specimens.
• Implements ventilator management and weaning protocols.
• Performs bronchial hygiene and airway care.
• Collects blood for PH gas analysis and notifies physicians of results.
• Monitors gas exchange via non-invasive methods (pulse oximetry, capnography).
• Assists in transport of ventilated patients with artificial airways.
• Administers oxygen and humidification; adjusts ventilator settings as ordered.
• Responds to cardiopulmonary emergencies per ACLS/BCLS standards.
• Provides emergent airway care including intubation per policy.
• Implements ventilator management adhering to ICU standards.
