Summary:
Under the direction of department management and according to policies and procedures, the Respiratory Therapist, Senior demonstrates advanced knowledge in respiratory care and patient care areas. The therapist administers competent care through airway management, mechanical ventilator management, oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, respiratory procedures, and treatments aimed at assessing, preventing, stabilizing, or remedying respiratory dysfunction.

Responsibilities:

1. Administers standard respiratory care including aerosol medication delivery, bedside pulmonary function testing, breathing exercises, oxygen therapy, and arterial punctures. Manages airways including aspiration, tracheostomy care, tube changes, intubations, and extubations. Performs pulmonary function testing as needed.
2. May be required to be on-call during days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
3. Performs ventilator care, including setup, verification, monitoring, and weaning, using specialized modes to manage patient conditions.
4. Maintains and improves knowledge and skills, functions independently, serves as a resource, and may assume Charge Therapist responsibilities.
5. Records all pertinent patient care information in accordance with hospital policies and electronic medical records.
6. Determines appropriate inhalant administration methods, precautions, and modifications, and provides pulmonary education tailored to patient needs, ensuring safety.
7. Maintains respiratory supplies, inspects and tests equipment, and demonstrates procedures to staff and trainees.

Other Information:

Education Requirements: Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.

Licensure/Certification Requirements: Licensed as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in North Carolina, registered (RRT), BLS at hire, and other certifications as required, with annual renewal.

Professional Experience Requirements: Minimum of 2 years as a Respiratory Therapist.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability to interpret clinical and technical information, communicate effectively, and apply mathematical and reasoning skills to clinical situations.
