Job summary

The Residential Instructor at Alternative Services Connecticut, Inc. will supervise and support individuals with developmental disabilities in a home setting, ensuring safety, dignity and progress toward individual goals.

You will follow agency policies, document behavior, incidents and daily activities, and provide or organize programs and community activities across shifts. Minimum HS diploma or GED, with 2+ years experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED.
• Two years experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or dual diagnosis; edu substitution allowed.
• Valid driver’s license; able to be insured and travel as needed.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
• Ability to obtain CPR, First Aid, PMT and DDS State Medication Administration.
• Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and intervene physically when required.

Responsibilities

• Monitor consumer behavior and implement behavior management programs; document on forms.
• Document all shift activities and incidents in the log and on consumers in Therap.
• Provide programmatic and statistical reports as required.
• Maintain safety, appearance and cleanliness of home; conduct inspections and minor repairs.
• Maintain a professional attitude with co-workers, management and outside agencies.
• Know and implement all Agency policies and procedures, licensing regulations and DDS contracts.
• Alert appropriate personnel to problems; complete incident reports promptly.
• Implement policies, procedures and commitments to consumers per DDS and agencies.
• Attend staff meetings; report duties and participate in trainings as required.
• Act as advocate and role model for consumers; treat individuals with respect and dignity.
• Assist or complete necessary hygiene for consumers.
• Document activity pertaining to welfare of home/consumers, including movements, incidents and medical events.
• Distribute medications according to schedules and guidelines.
• Provide activities or programs for consumers during each shift; supervise and interact with consumers.
• Provide counseling or reinforcement to address progress and issues.
• Assist in supervising and safely transporting residents to activities and programs.
• Know and follow emergency procedures for fires, storms, outages and incidents.
• Assist guardians and others with planning and normalization/person-centered planning.
• Report rights violations; participate in investigations as directed.
• Assist in shopping, meal prep, setup and cleanup when on duty.
• Attend in-service training and provide training as required.
• Have thorough working knowledge of Agency policies and procedures.
• Other duties as assigned by Residential Manager or upper management; follow behavior support plans.
