Job Description

RESIDENCE LIFE COORDINATOR

Are you passionate about fostering a vibrant, inclusive, supportive residential community? Student Housing and Residence Life, within the Division of Student Affairs at UAB, seeks a dedicated Residence Life Coordinator to lead and manage a residence hall housing 600 and 800 students. This full-time, live-in role is a 12-month position, typically assigned for two years, and is equivalent to a hall director, community coordinator, or resident director at other institutions.

Residence Life Coordinators are instrumental in creating a safe, engaging, and academically supportive living environment. Ideal candidates will have experience in student life on a college campus, preferably in areas such as student housing, student activities, or leadership development. Prior service as a Resident Assistant (RA) is strongly preferred.

Depending on experience and availability, candidates may be assigned to residence halls serving first-year or upper-class students. Responsibilities include supervising, recruiting, training, and mentoring student and graduate assistants while ensuring the overall well-being and success of residential students.

This role is key in implementing a residential curriculum focused on holistic student development, academic success, and community building. The Residence Life Coordinator will collaborate closely with campus partners, including UAB's academic schools and colleges, the Vulcan Materials Academic Success Center, the UAB Writing Center, Retention Initiatives, Student Involvement and Leadership, and other offices within and beyond the Division of Student Affairs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, select, train, and evaluate Resident Assistants and a Graduate Assistant (depending on residence hall placement). Provide ongoing training and development opportunities for staff and coordinate work assignments and special projects
  • Assist in implementing educational priorities and learning outcomes through strategy implementation. Employ residential curriculum philosophy as a framework for student and staff development to facilitate intentional connections with residential students and stakeholders
  • Collaborate with relevant campus partners to provide academic and interest-based housing; conduct assessments to ensure themed housing areas meet programmatic and learning objectives
  • Serves as a preliminary student conduct officer for an assigned residential area; meets with students to review inappropriate behaviors and determine appropriate behaviors and expectations; develops responsible and civil community environments
  • Daily administration includes oversight for the implementation of health and safety inspections, follow-up on maintenance work orders, room change, consolidation, check-in/out, and serving as the liaison with cleaning and maintenance staff to oversee the general upkeep of the hall
  • Work with Student Housing and Residence Life's international student population to help them adjust to campus life and connect with appropriate resources
  • Participate in a rotating on-call system providing emergency assistance to staff and residents
  • Performs other duties as assigned
