Job description

Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems.

The Silberstein Lab is looking for a Research Technician I/II. The main goal of the laboratory is to combine basic stem cell biology and clinically relevant murine models in order to develop new therapeutic approaches to promote hematopoietic stem cell function in bone marrow failure and to enhance hematopoietic reconstitution after bone marrow transplantation. We are particularly interested in using microenvironment-derived molecules as drugs or therapeutic targets and have identified several novel niche factors using proximity-based single cell analysis as a discovery strategy (for details, please see Silberstein et al, Cell Stem Cell 2016, Goncalves, Silberstein et al, Cell 2016).

Responsibilities

A successful candidate will work as a part of the highly collaborative team and focus on conducting animal experiments which involve stem cell transplantation, fluorescently activated cell sorting/analysis and molecular studies of stem cells/progenitors.

Other responsibilities may include:

  1. Perform experiments at the bench level to support investigative work.
  2. Murine colony maintenance.
  3. Prepare and maintain laboratory reagents, stocks, cultures or cell lines.
  4. Perform and modify documented protocols and assays.
  5. Maintain laboratory records and compile data on experiments and assays.
  6. Interpret and report on experimental results.
