Job Summary

Astound Broadband is searching for a Fiber Splicing Technician in our Port Orchard, Washington area. This position plays a vital role in ensuring quality and timely deliveries of our fiber services to customers. This candidate will perform prep and fusion of single-mode or multi-mode fiber optic cables for both inside and outside plant construction. They will be performing fiber panel audits and splice case audits, as well as properly placing mid-sheath splices.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Perform prep and fusion of single-mode or multi-mode fiber optic cables for both inside and outside plant construction.
  2. Perform fiber panel audits and splice case audits.
  3. Properly place mid-sheath splices.
  4. Test and troubleshoot fiber using an OTDR, optical power meter, fiber identifier, and scope.
  5. Perform installation and testing of fiber cross connects.
  6. Work with Construction Project Managers and Fiber Design to perform splicing as directed.
  7. Provide Fiber Design team with detailed reports of field splicing activity.
  8. Conform to quality control guidelines, including compliance with OSHA, FCC, NESC, NEC, and following procedures outlined in manuals and employee handbook.
  9. Maintain and secure equipment.
  10. Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic for high productivity with minimal supervision.
  11. Participate in engineering, permit, and construction processes.
  12. Construct splice cases, including grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage, and sealing.
  13. Recommend changes in fiber optic cable routing and construction methodologies.
  14. Assist in scheduling splicing jobs with Construction Managers and/or Fiber Design.
  15. Support training for Fiber Splicer I-II.
  16. Coordinate with NOC for maintenance splicing needs.
  17. Work with Fiber Design on parts and equipment.
  18. Work flexible hours and on-call rotation, including nights and weekends.
  19. Other duties as assigned.
  20. Possess a valid driver's license and maintain a clean driving record.
Requirements/Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent
Experience
  • 5+ years of splicing experience, including proper placement of mid-sheath splices
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficient with construction equipment, hand tools, fusion splicer, OTDR, fiber identifiers, and scope.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to adhere to regulations and policies.
  • Organizational skills for effective prioritization.
  • Basic computer skills: Outlook, Excel, Word, Google Suite, Smartsheets.
  • Experience with Ribbon and single-mode fiber fusion.
  • Understanding of safety practices.
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and on-call.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid driver’s license and auto insurance.
  • Live within 30 miles or a 1-hour commute of the territory.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to carry, climb, and operate a 28 ft, 75-pound extension ladder.
  • Lift and move up to 100 pounds.
  • Good vision and ability to perform tasks at heights.
  • Work standing 50-70% of the time.
  • Work in various environmental conditions, including outdoors and at heights.
  • Work near power lines and in inclement weather.

Salary Range

The Washington base salary is $27.50 - $45.00/hr, with bonus and benefits. Specific ranges include:

  • Fiber Splicing Technician I: $27.50-$38.00/hr
  • Fiber Splicing Technician II: $32.50-$42.00/hr
  • Fiber Splicing Technician III: $33.00-$45.00/hr
