The Manis Lab is exploring ways to collect and genetically correct hematopoietic stem cells from patients with sickle cell disease. Studies have demonstrated the success of gene therapy as a therapeutic option with recent FDA approval of two of these products. Some of our areas of study focus on:

  • Optimizing mobilization and HSC collection in sickle cell patients undergoing gene therapy
  • Understanding how the bone marrow and hematopoietic cells is altered in SCD
  • Using mouse modes of SCD to test and visualize the bone marrow and other hematopoietic organs

This role would focus on translational work, characterizing mouse and human stem cells with the opportunity to interact with clinical trial studies in patients with sickle cell disease.

The Research Assistant I will be responsible for:

  • Performing the following techniques typically required for the study:
    • Maintaining records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed
    • Maintaining confidentiality and ensuring that data are stored according to protocol
    • Sterilizing and cleaning glassware, and preparing media and other materials using appropriate procedures
    • Keeping an inventory of supplies, alerting supervisor to needed supplies
    • Processing orders for supplies and/or animals
    • Attending courses in safety procedures for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive, and toxic materials
    • Carrying out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols
  • Assisting in troubleshooting procedures if administration of tests does not go as expected
  • Conducting literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals
  • Attending courses, lectures and conferences to further own knowledge of consulting with other researchers and technicians to exchange information
  • Contributing to the team within and between departments and organizations
  • Animal work focused on mouse models of sickle cell disease

To qualify, you must have:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in STEM or Psychology is required
  • The willingness to work with and handle mice
  • A minimum commitment of two years is strongly preferred
  • The analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
