Job summary

BayCare Health System in Clearwater, FL is seeking a full-time Research Billing Specialist to ensure accurate scheduling, authorization, and coding of research patients while aligning with federal and state laws.

The role requires 5 years in research, finance, or medical coding and a macro-level understanding of research financing. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package and a 7:30 AM–4:00 PM or 8:00 AM–4:30 PM shift.

Responsibilities

• Serve as SME and liaison between clinical research operations and financial services to ensure proper scheduling, authorization, adjudication, and coding of research patients.
• Research, analyze, interpret, and disseminate protocol-specific billing instructions for sponsored and cooperative group research.
• Maintain knowledge of coding requirements for active protocols; coordinate CMS/NCD guidance and training for PFS departments; support onboarding of new staff.

Responsibilities

• Serves as the subject matter expert (SME) and link between clinical research operations and financial services departments to ensure research patients are scheduled, authorized, adjudicated and/or coded appropriately following applicable federal and state law.
• Responsible for researching, analyzing, interpreting, and disseminating protocol specific instructions related to billing and adjudication for sponsored and cooperative group research across BayCare.
• Maintains knowledge of coding requirements for all active research protocols, ensures First Coast notification and approval for trials with Special Determination Coverage, sets-up and facilitates trainings for Patient Financial Services (PFS) departments on specific billing guides, and supports leadership with training and onboarding new team members.
• Serves as a backup and mentor to the Research Administrative Specialists. Has extensive knowledge of Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) National Coverage Determination (NCD) with an emphasis on section 310.
