Job summary

MercyOne Northeast Iowa is seeking a part-time Medical Secretary/Registration Support for the Evening Shift in Waterloo. You will collect patient demographics and insurance information, enter data into the system, assign rooms when needed, and help ensure a smooth registration process for all visitors.

This role requires clear English communication, basic office software skills, and compliance with HIPAA and hospital policies.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and understand English; communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff and physicians.
• Completion of Medical Secretary program or similar office training.
• One year medical office experience preferred (scheduling, insurance, or registration).
• Strong computer skills and data entry; familiarity with Windows and databases.
• Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and hospital policies.

Position Purpose:

Gathers patient demographic and financial information and enters into computer system. Assigns patient rooms, prepares appropriate documentation and transports/escorts patient to assigned area.

What you will Do:

• Gathers patient demographic and financial information. Obtains appropriate signatures.

• Answers telephone, bed assignments made, stat cleans ordered and appropriate communication to house supervisor.

• Informs patient of hospital regulations, secures armband and obtains signatures on appropriate documents.

• Makes determinations regarding need for hospital issued Advance Beneficiary Notice (ABN waiver).

• Assures patient escorted/transported to assigned area. Meet and greet patients as registration process begins.

• Scans all needed information (physician orders, drivers licenses, insurance cards, consents, etc.).

• Pre-register all scheduled tests.

• Adheres to all safety, infection control and colleague health policies and procedures. Follows HIPAA, and EMTALA regulations per hospital policy.

Hours/Schedule:

.6 FTE; 24 hours per pay period; 2nd Shift; includes a weekend rotation.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Requires the ability to read, write and understand the English language, and communicate effectively with patients, visitors, staff and physicians while performing their job duties.

• Completion of Medical Secretary program or other general office training preferred.

• One- year medical office experience (scheduling, insurance, or registration) preferred. Hospital experience and or medical terminology preferred.

• Strong computer skills, Windows experience. Database software, mainframe information systems.

• Ability to convey positive image and communicate tactfully and professionally with staff, patients and the public.

• Ability to work with diverse groups of people and to work under pressure.
